Bitcoin Gaming: Turbo ’84

Mobile gaming isn’t something that I thought I’d be getting back in to having spent a bit more time offline these last 12 months.

Having said that, there were periods where I’d have long spells of being glued to the screen, sucked in by the dopamine hitting button animations of these mobile games.

However, when Bitcoin is thrown in to the mix with a chance of gaining some sats, I will quite happily free up a little bit of space on my phone to give these things a go!

With a growing list of games to choose from, I know I’m probably going to be engrossed in these for the rest of this year and beyond!

I’ve recently covered a couple of games already from Bitcoin Gaming company, THNDR Games, called Bitcoin Bounce and THNDR Bay. I’ll be covering Turbo ’84 in this blog which makes up the trilogy of games so far.

THNDR Games

Founded in November 2019, THNDR Games has been slowly but surely adding to its catalogue of mobile games which offers players the chance to win some sats by playing their games and completing challenges.

With a similar mission as TBM, THNDR Games are aiming to introduce more people into Bitcoin but via mobile gaming apps instead. Turbo ’84 was the second game they launched in July 2020.

What Is Turbo ’84?

This is a “lane-change” game where you take control of a car and move it across lanes on a motorway (or highway), avoiding obstacles, collecting power-ups and getting as far as you can to set a new high score.

Along the highway, there are raffle tickets that you can collect that put you in with a chance of winning sats from the daily prize draw.

Take control of a car across a 4-lane highway

There are four lanes that you can move across as you go forward by tapping the right or the left side of your screen. As your car goes forward, there are all kinds of bonuses on the ground such as:

  • Speed boosts – these speed up your car by 1 mph each time you hit them to go faster
  • Blue tokens – collect these to upgrade your car and unlock more cars
  • Purple raffle tickets – collect these to enter in to the daily raffle for a chance to win sats

From the home screen in the screenshot above, you have a record of your best score, showing you how far you got and your top speed, as well as your current number of raffle tickets and blue tokens.

At the bottom, you have a few options, from left to right:

  • Garage – this is where you can choose the car you want to use or buy and upgrade your engine
  • Store – you can buy the premium version of the game or unlock the whole car garage
  • Prize Draw – see the full information about how the prize draw works
  • Daily Prize Spin – additional prizes each day (although mine didn’t work at time of writing 🙁 )
  • Leaderboard – see how you compare to the top players.

Gameplay

Once again, the graphics from THNDR Games here are smooth and the controls are responsive and I personally experienced no lag. The appearance of the game is retro, as the name would suggest, with a very 1980s style feel to it, stemming from the electro-pop style music and the designs of the cars.

Turbo ’84 game play

I like that the game is perpetually in sunset, which gives for some pretty cool colour schemes as you’re driving along and that you have a live display of how your drive is going.

This is cleverly placed so as to not distract you from the task at hand but you can quickly glance down should you wish!

The game plays in portrait mode on the phone as well which makes sense as you need this aspect ratio to see in to the horizon of upcoming obstacles such as barrels that move across the lanes, barriers, traffic cones and jumps.

How Can THNDR Games Reward Players With Bitcoin?

All THNDR Games are free to play but make use of revenue from in-game adverts that help fund their games along with in-app purchases from the store. The ads can be annoying but you can buy the premium version of Turbo ’84 for £0.99 (at time of writing).

Every 1 or 2 attempts, an advert will pop-up or you can choose to watch one for a “revive” or additional blue tokens to upgrade your car.

How To Withdraw Sats From Turbo ’84

Congratulations on having some sweet sats raining down on you!

If you have won something from the daily raffle then you only have 5 days to claim the sats, otherwise they will go back in to the pool. More details about the raffle can be found in the terms and conditions in the app.

Tap the “Prize Draw” button from the home screen, then tap the Bitcoin icon at the bottom. You will see “Your Prizes” at the top with an option to withdraw. Tap this button to open your lightning wallet on your smartphone and then you will receive your sats instantly.

Before you get your hopes up, you aren’t going to be getting rich quickly by playing but for a chance to add to your sats pile whilst killing some time playing a game doesn’t sound bad at all in my view!

My Thoughts On The Game

Out of the 3 games from THNDR Games I’ve reviewed, I’d say Turbo ’84 is my favourite due to the retro feel of the game and that there’s always a way to acquire raffle tickets with a little more variety than Bitcoin Bounce.

Although when you first start the game, it can be a little tedious waiting to build up speed to a more challenging amount but you can quicken this by watching videos or paying for tickets to upgrade your cars engine.

I really like the style this game is laid out in with attention given to the design of the different menus, keeping in with the 80s theme.

I used to enjoy playing on the Need for Speed games on the Playstation and this game has the feel of the drag race game mode where you would have to switch lanes quickly to avoid traffic and obstacles.

There’s plenty of things to keep you going and even if you unlock everything, you can still acquire raffle tickets to win sats.

For me, Turbo ’84 is a great free game to play to pass the time if you have a few spare minutes and hopefully your luck is in with the daily raffle!
